Raised a substantial Dwayne Johnson-esque eyebrow at the notion of adjustable levels of audible white noise for Japanese commodes in order to find what's best for our individual style ( 🤔), then looked back a page and realized it was probably in reference to a hypothetical breakthrough in eyeliner technology instead. Speaking of which, I admit that I'm starting to get the teensiest bit suspicious how it seems we never see Dwayne Johnson *and* The Rock in the same place at the same time. |

While it's nice that someone cared enough about your wares to start "following" you, having to submit a request in order to "follow back" (seems the polite thing to do, anyway) a private IG account feels like pressing and holding the doorbell of a party to which you know you aren't invited...

Has anyone ever thought that the reason we like a certain character such as Jax from TADC, Toothless for HTTYD, or etc etc is because we are like them and relate to them? I was thinking about my fav villain the other day and realized he actually killed Sonic once(if you have never heard of the Sonic 06 disaster, Then you probably have no idea who I’m talk about. The villain’s name is Mephiles the Dark and he is a two part super villain who actually killed Sonic and rejoined with his other half and almost conquered the world.)So yeah… just a thought😅

@MidnightTH I feel like people (including myself) tend to have a soft spot for villains that aren’t just the evil everyone thinks they are- it’s really nice when morally gray characters are well written/portrayed because you get to see the reasoning behind how they act. And we can’t forget the hope for a glorious redemption arc ✨

@blackcat79 Although I for one am of the opinion that the "villain was really a misunderstood antihero all along" trend has overstayed its welcome by now, especially when they rewrite history ("retconning") in order to artificially make them more sympathetic. For example, I hear they really did King Stefan dirty (the father of Princess "Sleeping Beauty" Aurora) in the MALEFICENT movies, however many of them there are at this point. This is particularly galling to anyone paying attention, since he was the only character in the original animated movie to speak up on behalf of his daughter, her agency, and what SHE might think of the entire arranged situation. So *this* is how The Party now treats an "ally"...? 🤔Of course, all this is fiction, but I would argue the case that it does matter: our collected stories are told and passed down at least partly for the sake of shaping malleable kids into adults who at the very least know right from wrong. This deliberate muddying of the waters might be more damaging than we think. Just for instance, a kiddo growing up in current era with no recollection of the world before WICKED ("patient zero" for this trend) was a thing will probably have no more nor less sentimental attachment to the original 1939 WIZARD OF OZ, let alone the L. Frank Baum book series, and probably won't make any kind of mental division between the two--it's all the same shared canon to her (and the newest stuff abrogates the old). I wonder what Gregory Maguire, author of the book from which WICKED was based, would have to say in this discussion if asked. I'm aware that he's admitted he's always been made uncomfortable when adoring fans tell him how they read it when they were very young (they probably shouldn't've; the book gets rather adult with the content). |

@Afterthought went shopping last night, and while perusing the offerings on the clearance rack, couldn't help but notice the sheer number of Villain-themed shampoo bottles (mostly the evil queen from SNOW WHITE and Cruella de Vil, but more could've lurking behind them...) the store was practically giving away at this stage. Maybe the trend really has run its course. |

@blackcat79 Yeah that seems to be the case for most people, but Mephiles is evil to the core. Which is funny because he was actually created by some guy in his castle’s basement called project Solaris. @GiuseppeK They never should’ve made the Maleficent or Cruella de Vil movies. The just absolutely suck! I just don’t understand why Disney ruins a villain by making a movie or tv show. There is one Exception… Loki is probably the only villain story that was actually great. Don’t know why go watch it for your self.

@MidnightTH Not just a TV series or a movie, seems the House of Mouse is doubling down and moving ahead with an entire "Villains"-themed area of the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. If the last couple years of "improvements" to the parks are any indication, it'll probably be at least 80% bars selling overpriced drinks to adults with far more money than sense. I was dimly aware of the LOKI show, but frankly (and "pun" most definitely intended) the Punisher is the only Marvel character about whom I've ever cared. Sounds as though Disney really dropped the ball with him, though--seems his behavior in the latest show was anything but comic-accurate Frank Castle. |

@GiuseppeK I suppose I am just a sucker for good character development lol. (World building and character building are my favorite stages of writing 😄) I just really love it when all the characters are well established and are more than just a single dimension. However, I do agree that Disney is going a little overboard- rather than explaining the past of some of these characters, they’re completely modifying the story (especially in Cruella)

@blackcat79 When it's well written and doesn't lazily try to overwrite the past, we absolutely should have ourselves some nuanced, multifaceted villains. Much as I do still want the good guys to win in the end, the best examples can often be cooler or even more memorable than the heroes themselves.Unfortunately, the cinematic industry can be like a massive ship on the ocean, and turning it around simply can't happen on a dime. As such, I've been hearing through the grapevine that there's a feature length Gaston prequel coming our way (BEAUTY & THE BEAST's primary antagonist). Come that time, I'm morbidly curious to see what the cultural commentators will have to say--I don't expect male villains will get the same sort of PR makeover, at least not if they're playing it straight. If the tongue will be firmly in cheek all the while, I admit I had a good chuckle at the satirical stage production of TWISTED, which presented Aladdin's Jafar as a long-suffering, well-meaning public servant scapegoated as the source of all the kingdom's ills (I'd link the song "Dream a Little Harder" here, but refraining since it doesn't hold back on the profanity). In much the same way as "The Reduced Shakespeare Company," the better the audience knows the source material, the funnier it gets. 👍 |

Just watched “The Devil Wears Prada” the other day- I thought it was a great movie! However, it occurred to me that it would’ve been so much better if they tied the film itself into the title better. For example, it would’ve been lovely if Miranda had a signature pair of Prada heels that she always wore. Or in that scene where Emily is berating Andy for “selling her soul the second she put on those Jimmy Choos” if she had sold her soul the second she put on those Prada heels. Idk if there are some references to Prada that I missed but this is just a random thought that I had afterwards 🤷♀️

Although sometimes, it works quite well when the movie title doesn't actually tie in all that strongly to the material. Just for instance, despite the movie bearing the name BEETLEJUICE, the eponymous "Ghost with the Most" is only onscreen about fifteen minutes of the total runtime (and one of these days, I'll get around to checking out the sequel). Originally, the proposed title was SCARED SHEETLESS (they did the right thing 👍 ). It's possible there were some references to Prada you didn't catch--not that I would fare any better, I suspect. I'm thinking back to when AUSTIN POWERS was brand new, and all summer long, I was hearing my peers who fancied themselves brilliant wits parroting the dialogue and clearly thought it was the funniest movie ever made. When I finally got around to seeing it, I have a hunch I was genuinely more amused than most of them: if you didn't grow up watching classic James Bond movies, you missed more than half the gags. |
