It's been a minute since I read any of them, but I can vouch that one would have to struggle to find something offensive with the tales--a mix of young adult fantasy, sci-fi, and humor--the author was renowned for making the sort of puns we can both laugh at and feel a bit irked that we didn't think of them ourselves. Once more, it's been many moons since I read Piers Anthony and while it never registered with me at the time, seems he and his works are controversial in current era--while digging for those links for your perusal, I'd be remiss if I didn't warn you that some of his stuff hasn't aged well since the first print; there are now accusations of misogynistic attitudes which many not sit well with modern readership. That said, I can say with more confidence that we can't go wrong with Douglas Adams's THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. I remember I had gotten as far as book five in the "increasingly misnamed trilogy," and I can't remember ever reading a book that elicited genuine guffaws out of me as I proceeded. I love how he includes the randomest little tangents that are so unrelated yet somehow so related lol (like that one part about the wormhole starting a massive war between two alien kingdoms just for it to end when… well, let’s not spoil it) I have an edition of “The More Than Complete Hitchhiker’s Guide” which has multiple books in one. Though it’s been quite some time since I last read it and you’ve reminded me that I ought to visit it once more…

For the record, Piers Anthony was first brought to my attention in the form of a gift from a friend back in the late nineteen-hundreds (which she personalized by scribing on the first blank page my name and "You're pun in a million" ❤️). She was (and last I snooped on her social media) still very much on the progressive left side of the political spectrum and clearly took no umbrage with the author nor his works at the time. 🤔
GiuseppeK Bracelet King	1 month, 2 weeks ago by GiuseppeK @MidnightTH Can't imagine there was much if anything at all objectionable in the film adaptation that would've had it in particular on any parental no-no list, at least if Hollywood didn't take some substantial liberties. Although rare, there can be times when, in defiance of the manta, the movie can be better than the book. Just off the top of the head, THE GREEN MILE, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, DIE HARD (based on NOTHING LASTS FOREVER by Roderick Thorp, and if you'll allow a shameless bit of self-promotion: #202228 ) and FIRST BLOOD were all superior to their literary source material. In the case of the latter, I believe even the author admits it, but in his defense, it was his first published work. Depending on our point of view, this would also be the case for the Bond movies of the '60s: as "problematic" as the films might be to current era sensibilities, I can only imagine the paroxysms of frothing-at-the-mouth rage the original Ian Fleming version of GOLDFINGER or LIVE AND LET DIE would do to modern audiences... Don't even get me started on STARSHIP TROOPERS--there's no finer example of the importance of never judging a book by its movie. 👍 Admittedly, most of the above aren't the kinds of works I'd expect young ladies to get much mileage out of, so I'd be remiss if I didn't include THE PRINCESS BRIDE on the list. Not that the original book stinks or anything (and it's required reading for hardcore fans of the movie), but I'd expect much of the author's humor would be lost on readers now. The film was also MUCH kinder to the titular Buttercup; her literary version was an utterly vapid, one-dimensional ditz.

I was watching it on my aunt’s old ipod! I thought it was a guide to the galaxy, but no it was not! I really wasn’t paying attention and it was 6 AM in the morning! I do have to agree with you on the Princess Bride bit! I’ve watched the movie then I read(listened) it!

GiuseppeK Bracelet King	1 month, 2 weeks ago by GiuseppeK @MidnightTH I do understand, but couldn't resist a bit of mild ribbing at your expense--I suspect it was the handiwork of an automatic spellchecker that thinks it's smarter than us (Dear Spellcheck: I did NOT mean "ducking." I assure you, I very, VERY rarely mean "ducking"). While I'm fully aware I'm the odd one out (but one gets used to that), I never really understood the hype for Harry Potter. More power to anyone who enjoys the saga, but I remember having a copy of the original book crammed into my carryon when it was hot off the press and I was making a cross-country flight, and hearing the effusive praise how it was the greatest thing since the talking Marcel Marceau doll. I did give it an honest go, yet found reading instead about the butt-massaging chair in the issue of SkyMall magazine more interesting. And while I don't know how many of the movies were released between 2001-2005, between my adventures in babysitting and taking dates who wanted to see them, I ended up nodding off for each of them in the theater (in my defense, I simply wasn't emotionally invested and I was working night shift in those days).

Curious how it would work as radio, given the constant interruptions of the narrative by the author (or, as he insisted, the "abridger" who was simply giving us just "the good parts"). If you'll pardon a small flex, I even went so far as to follow his instructions to send a letter to the publisher to get a copy of the reunion scene (as the cool kids probably still say, "IYKYK"). Now then, was the version you listened to the anniversary edition which included the first chapter of the long lost sequel BUTTERCUP'S BABY?
