i’ve never used yarn, but i’m pretty sure you could get away with the thinner side of yarn

you're going to want to use thinner yarn, I suggest looking at the paper that gets wrapped around the yarn and select something that is designed for size 7 knitting needles or smaller, it's also important you pick all the same thickness, as otherwise your knots will be lopsided and will not line up nicely. I use crotchet yarn for base strings on my alphas. The type I use is Aunt Lydia’s Fashion 3.
