I just finished 6th form, so I would probably be going back next week. School always started in the 1st week of September, maybe in the second, but never in August, that is WILD to me. And always always ends in the 2nd week of July. That's pretty consistent across the whole of England, about 6 weeks of summer holidays! I'm going into uni now, so I think I start on the 21st of September (that's so late to me) and have no idea when the holidays start

@clean Yeah, from reading the other responses, July does seem pretty late haha. But, I think we get more holidays throughout the academic year than others (every 6 weeks it's either a 1 week or 2 week holiday. So the first holiday in late October, half-term, is 1 week, 6 weeks later in mid-late December we have 2 weeks, then February it's 1 week, etc)

@Emmaloves wow! that does make sense, so instead of having one or two long breaks you have several shorter ones?

@clean Yes! That's shocking to me that you only have 1-2 breaks, how long are they and when are they scheduled?

@Emmaloves techincally i have four breaks throughout the year, i guess i forgot to mention that sorry. summer break this year was june 26 to august 31, winter break is usually two weeks, around Christmas and the new year. spring break is always the last week of March, and fall break is only three days and the weekend

@clean Wow that is inasane! I could not survive such little breaks. And I'm pretty sure US schools start way earlier than UK's (most start about 8:30am-9:00am & end about 3:00pm-3:30pm). Fall break is not even a break 😭 We have at least 2-3 of those in an academic year due to staff training days

@Emmaloves yeah after hearing that UK schools have that many breaks, i kind feel discouraged. and this sounds disastrous but i'm pretty sure American schools start as early as 7:00 or 7:30 and end at, like, 2 or 2:30!!

@clean Oh woah, that's like the time I wake up for school. So both are about 6-7 hours, but yeah I would NOT be ready and rearing to learn so early. But, I think schooling in the UK is more challenging, because the qualifications we get from our like final exams (GCSEs at the end of high school and A Levels/BTECs at the end of 6th form) are solely based on the papers you sat + 99% of answers are extended, written responses, you get maybe 1 multiple choice question every 3 papers for example. But from what I've heard you guys get graded on participation, homework, you get to bring in cheat sheets, have extra credit (I'm sure not all at once but still is a lot of help lol) as well as exams, so ik your grade boundaries are quite high, but it is easier to do better imo

@Emmaloves wow, UK school sounds difficult! I'm Canadian so we're kind of in the middle of the Americans and the British. we do get graded on participation, but i haven't really had stuff like open book tests or such. and maybe i'm just young but homework is never checked as it's usually just whatever you didn't finish in class and certainly not for grades. however we get graded on effort, so if you don't do your homework then you're still not going to get a great grade. we don't have GCSEs or the SATs, it's up to each province to decide. where I live we have diploma exams in the last year of high school that ocunt for 30% of your final grade.

@clean Oops! I've read your bio and realise now haha that you're not American. Sorry, I just assume most people I talk to on the internet are, as 9/10 that's the case. But that's so interesting that you lot don't have a standard set of national exams. I think Canada seems to strike a good balance though!
