Crochet thread for alphas?

So I know that a lot of people use crochet thread instead of embroidery thread for making alphas. Is there a reason for this?

I think most use them as base strings. Personally I do it because I don't want to "waste" my embroidery thread.

I feel like it makes your bracelet sturdier and a little neater if you use it for base strings, but I’ve seen people who have neat bracelets and they just used embroidery floss for base strings, so it really just comes with practice. It’s also a lot cheaper and comes in huge bundles.

I prefer crochet thread for both alphas and normals because it is much cheaper than some brands of embroidery thread. I haven’t noticed any major differences in my bracelets, even when I mix embroidery and crochet thread.

@halokiwi @oceanknot @Samanada thanks for the help! i looked it up on amazon and there are different sizes of crochet thread, which size would you guys reccomend for base strings?

If you want to use the crotchet thread for base strings, then I would recommend size 3. If you want to knot with it, then I would recommend size 5 since it’s the closest size to embroidery thread. You could probably also use size 5 for base strings as well, but I prefer to use thread that’s a little thicker for my base strings.

Size 3 isn’t available where I live, so I use size 5. I find it a little bit smaller than embroidery thread, so if you can find size 3, I’d recommend that.

I like using the crochet thread for base strings in wall hangings and keychains but find it’s a little bulky for my taste in a bracelet. I use it like @halokiwi said- so I don’t waste all my embroidery floss on hidden strings!
