How do people make variations that are different from the pattern?

I was looking at an alpha pattern yesterday. It was #12398 and I noticed that there were variations, like the one added by @sarahsvahn that were a different size from the original pattern. From what I understand how to do, you can only change the colors, but there were 3 variations on that pattern that I had no clue how people made. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know.

To make variations like this you need to go to "create patterns". You can't do it via "add variation". The generator for example recognises alpha patterns as variations that are the original pattern several times in a row.
