stretched Alpha - I FIGURED IT OUT!!

Hi everyone, I just thought I’d share this as I’ve just figured out the fix. Every alpha that I was making was coming out stretched. Say I was doing a circle, it would come out as a rugby ball shape. My knots were coming out more rectangular than square. Reading through comments on forums, people were suggesting tying the knots tighter - that didn’t work for me; I was ripping my hands raw almost because I was tying the knots so tight, and of course that was also making my bracelet virtually solid, and my patterns were still coming out elongated. However, it did give me the opportunity to diagnose the issue - my forward knots were tight, square and tiny...but my backwards knots, while they were being tied tightly, were still larger. I decided to test different tying methods. The one that worked was this: tying the knots a lot less tightly - still firm, but not super tight, and after each row holding the base strings tight and firmly pushing each knot up towards the previous row. It makes the knots rounder, and less elongated, which in turn fixes the pattern stretching issue. It also makes the bracelet itself more flexible. Just thought I would share this as I’m sure I’m not the only person getting frustrated with stretched designs!!

Yeah thanks. That’s also pretty much the conclusion I had for the same problem on my alphas.

Hi! I know you made that comment a long time ago, but i just wanted to let you know that it really helped me figure out what was wrong! i’ve had the same issue for the longest time and i wasn’t sure what i was doing wrong. i’ve always wondered why everyone else’s knots look more square. I will definitely try the method you suggested! Thank you so much!

I recently learned how to make alphas and I am SUCH a perfectionist that the stretching out issue seriously has me at my wits end. I tried using thicker base strings (3mm crochet thread) and this seems to help a little. Knotting very tightly for me has proven to be an almost impossible habit for me to break and it’s frustrating. I have scoured the internetz and watched every step by step alpha tutorial I can find. All of their knotting seems to be just as tight as mine, but obviously it’s impossible to really demonstrate string tension. I’d really like to practice knotting loosely on a small pattern. Does anyone have any pattern #s that are good for practice? Thank you!
