GiuseppeK: Then again, it's not as though native speakers of English are immune to malapropisms (erroneously using a word, believing it means something else). I can only smirk at the memory of one of my professors, who had an extensive array of them. "These findings were corrugated by..." (the word he meant was "corroborated"), "he suffered abuse such as racial epitaphs" ("epithets").

GiuseppeK: If "degraded" is more ubiquitous than that as a search term, it could be simply a matter of one person mistakenly using the term believing it meant something else, causing a chain of consequent pattern creators to copy and use the term while brainstorming with what they should populate that particular box. For instance, if we're being honest, I'm willing to bet at least some of us weren't 100% clear on the meaning of "gradient" before we joined up here.
