Just tried this pattern with including the strings on the sides for the heart. Didn't turn out as a heart, just looks like a hole.

this pattern is mainly fowards knots with a few bf knots and fb knots. to make the heart cutout all you need to do is skip making knots where the pattern say not to. I hope this helps 😄
