Multi-Step Equations

๐ So far youโve learned how to add and subtract numbers.ย

What happens when you need to **both add AND subtract **in the same equation? ๐ค

๐ Letโs look at an example:

You have5 cookiesin your lunch box. Your friend gives you3 morecookies. Youeat 2cookies. How many cookies do you have left?

We start by **writing an equation **for the problem.

5 + 3 - 2 = ?

How will you solve this **multi-step **equation? ๐ค

Solve **multi-step** equations by **simplifying one operation **at a time.

**๐ Operation **is a word for addition, or subtraction.

๐ We go from **left to right**. So we start with addition first.

5 + 3 = 8

Now, we can rewrite our original equation and put **8** in the place of **5 + 3**.

Now, we subtract!

8 - 2 = 6

Great job! ๐ Our answer is **6.**

๐ Letโs try this equation.

20 - 11 + 5 = ?

โ
This time subtraction is the first operation we **simplify.**

20 - 11 = 9

Now, we can put **9** in place of the first equation.

All we have left to do is add!

9 + 5 = 14

Nice work! ๐

Now, you can move on to the practice.
