Alright folks the game is simple: I'll name a song I like. The person after me will listen to the full song and rate it (let's say, out of 10 with a short rating), and leave another song, and so on and so forth. Be nice and have fun! :]

First song: Can't Make A Sound - Elliott Smith

Going into this cold with no prior knowledge of the tune or even awareness of the artist, I'd give it a 6. No better nor any worse than anything else that would've been on the radio in the '00s. Giving it an additional point up from a 5 since I appreciated that I could mostly understand the lyrics without having to look them up (although on the third pass, I had to break down and check--"spinning the world like a toy top" was for some reason coming across as "spinning the world like a turtle" with a New Jersey accent ("toitul") to my ears 🤔 ). While I don't know for certain what he was trying to convey, I probably wouldn't ever get too perplexed searching for meaning: it'd just be the sort of tune to which no one in the huddle would strongly object to as we worked on some sort of task and a bit of background noise would've been nice.

The score might not be final in the event that the DJ wouldn't know when to give it a rest. Bitterly recalling the summer of 2012 when I was out in the Middle East and Armed Forces Network Radio was practically playing "Somebody That I Used to Know" on repeat. It was honestly a relief if "Call Me Maybe" was on instead.

"W.U.G." by Chris Fleming.

I would give it a solid 7/10. I had only ever really listened to Monster by Skillet before this, but I was impressed by this song. I find a lot of more metal/rock bands sound really similar on most of their tracks, which was not the case with this song. I probably would have rated it higher but sadly I've been out of my metal phase for too long 😭 (I feel like a fraud @GiseppeK had like this whole analysis)

Roundtable Rival - Lindsey Stirling (I recommend watching the music video, Lindsey Stirling is also a talented dancer)

Perhaps a bit cynical on my part, but I'd venture to say that in most cases a listener is probably obligated to watch the video for the first hearing--I don't expect too many folks would have the requisite attention span any longer for the schtick to work purely as radio.

Had I heard it when the track was brand new (seems to be at least eleven years old now, if we're taking TheyTube at their word), I'd've given it a 7. I could easily imagine myself skipping rope to it irrespective of whether or not I'd seen the video or had any previous awareness of the artist. I can appreciate that the violin is a notoriously difficult instrument to play well (let alone while shakin' it, too), and while I'm not naïve enough to believe there was ever a time when recording artists couldn't cheat to some degree (synthesizers in particular changed the game), she would've gotten the benefit of the doubt from me, especially if it ever would've dawned on me that I *did* see her perform something live many years ago.

In 2026 AD, the age of this production absolutely works in its favor: I'm giving it a solid 8. A period piece from an era before we the audience have to presume everything from the tunes to the moves and even the performers themselves are completely artificial. An elegant production, from a more civilized age. 😎

@GiuseppeK couldn't have said it better myself. Apparently when Lindsey Stirling was a kid, she wanted to do violin and dance lessons, but her parents would only pay for one. So she chose to do violin and is entirely self-taught in dance.

I'm interested to know what you think of the song Usseewa by Ado. Obviously I have no idea how you feel about songs that aren't in English, (I don't even know if English is your first language). However with how thorough your insights have been previously I'm really curious to know what you think! But anyways to provide some context, Usseewa was Ado's debut song, and was released the night before she turned 18. The song broke several records and peaked at #1 on billboard hot Japan. It is now the 15th most streamed Japanese song of all time. I highly, highly suggest taking a look at the lyrics or an analysis of them, its such a fascinating song.

Had to force myself to treat the first listen as radio: as a one-time student of the language, each time kanji started populating on the screen as the lyrics progressed, I found myself pausing the video just so I crack the dictionary and refresh my memory on words and phrases I used to kind of know...

Alrightey; without looking at the screen and feeling like an utter disappointment to my favorite sensei, I could at least ascertain A: she's singing in Japanese, B: she's angry, and C: she's rather rude and a bit profane. If I'd left it at that, I'd've shrugged and gone about my day. 5/10, and no better nor worse to my ears than any number of Japanese pop tunes that would probably forever remain just out of reach of my round-eye comprehension.

But then after allowing myself to cheat and take a deeper look into the tune, I see that this was released just about a year after I, with a heavy heart, left school in Japan. If it was even half as big of a hit as the internet says it is, I'd've certainly been aware of it in the cultural zeitgeist. No doubt I would've learned most of it from my younger classmates in my official capacity as a writing tutor (where most of my regional pop culture knowledge from 2017-2019 was gleaned). As such, I've personally known dozens of Ado-s, and after being lucky enough to live in the country and experience some of it as an impartial observer, I flatter myself enough to think that I can sympathize a bit with the frustration behind those lyrics ("I'm Fairly Confident I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings").

If things work out according to plan, I hope to visit my beloved Japan at the end of the summer (my first return since), and I have every intention of asking my honorary niece for her thoughts on this one (and I'll be sure to have #69798 ready for her when I do).

@amayahhh Idk if I misinterpreted the game, but I think you listen to the song then give it a rating based on your first impressions! I’d probably give Bloodline a 8/10- I liked the guitar and lyrical content! Even though voice cracks can add extra emotion (if placed properly), and they suit her vocals, they were a little excessive for my tastes

@amyahhhh Did you mean "Bloodstream" by Alyssa Grace? I'd've probably just let it go, but sounds like @blackcat79 managed to find it, so now I'm gonna have to ask for a sanity check.

I realize this could just be a "me"-problem--similar to my suspicion that there are snacks available at Trader Joe's only visible to women... 🤔
