hey! thanks so much for clicking on this! i desperately need help deciding between marching band and volleyball for the fall. i have pros and cons of each, so…. here? i have only 2-3 days to decide…volleyball: PROS: i’ve been playing since 7th grade (5th year) pretty good - will probably be 1st year on varsity (rising junior) only leftie - big bonus much higher skill level to play with - probably the best i will play our team lost some senior hitters, and idk who else they’d replace them with other than me… CONS: volleyball girls have such mean attitudes - especially my school freshmen year on jv i was a benchwarmer, minus the few odd sets where i’d play sophomore year on jv i played middle (not a great position for a leftie) not gonna go d1 or anything like that in college, maybe d2 d3 or club marching band: PROS: SUPER nice people - was very welcoming today i went to a rehearsal to get a feel for it - liked it! been playing flute for soon to be 6 years, clarinet for soon to be 4 1st time playing piccolo - didn’t go to bad always wanted to do marching band but didn’t really feel like i had a choice to not do volleyball, but laos not sure if I wanna give vb up they get to do so much more than volleyball gets to do CONS: learning everything marching related from scratch i feel like im constantly behind despite being on the older end, behind all my friends super busy schedule - can’t miss pretty much any performances i’d be out the last weekend of mb for vb tryouts, plus possibly a girl scout event weekend as well, not sure how my band director would respond to that (actually, u know he wouldn’t be happy, tends to have an “all about me and my problems” attitude when it comes to band) so… i have a big decision to make - any suggestions would be helpful! also what’s band camp like? just curious! |

While I realize it's tough to contemplate there ever being life beyond school, I'd cast a vote for band. At the risk of sounding like your dad, there are a whole lot of intangible qualities we can get from participation that will carry over to other aspects of life long after we've graduated, especially if we have no intention of pursuing volleyball in any serious capacity ever again. Moreover, it may simply be a matter of how much you value your free time and a social life with anyone who isn't a fellow band geek (I use the term affectionately). The volleyball squad also sounds like a bit too much drama, but then again, maybe that's not necessarily a negative thing (as a boy, it's something I've always preferred to avoid, at least). That said, and not to put too fine a point on it, in another couple years very little or nothing at all about high school is ever really going to matter again for us, so choose whichever one will be the most enjoyable. I really don't think you can wrong with that. But if you do elect to go with the sport, promise me you'll never lose your musical ability--the skill will be a gift to ourselves when we're much older. As for "band camp," ooooh--anecdotal, but the crazy stuff that happens there is LEGENDARY, especially for flautists. https://www.evanvandoren.com/2024/02/the-case-for-marching-band/#:~:text=The%20multifaceted%20nature%20of%20marching,academic%20success%20and%20personal%20growth. |

@leviOsa_09 This is a hard decision, and trust me, I get it (me and my two friends had to decide too 😬). However, I went the marching band route and do not regret it!!! So that’s what I would say. To me, marching band offers leadership roles/opportunities and ways to make all kinds of connections with people. At least in my band, it’s comprised of all different kinds of people with all different interests and personalities (popular, “nerdy”, athletic, etc), and I think that having those interactions now will help you later in life. Learning how to talk and work with different types of people is useful in job situations. Volleyball does offer team building, which is also useful, however, the team is mostly made of “popular” girls, which to me isn’t my crowd whatsoever 😅 but to each their own. You will make memories you will never forget in band, and do some of the wildest things you can imagine. As for worrying about your band director being mad for missing things, (I’m also in Girl Scouts lol), i wouldn’t let it worry you. If you have a good record of not missing events/competitions/practices, then I wouldn’t care what the director thinks honestly lol. The thing with marching band is that yes you may feel like you’re behind, but once you learn it, it does come naturally to you. You can also “climb the ranks” and practice to become a better marcher/better at your instrument. Outside of marching season, if you still have a passion for volleyball there are other leagues you can play in, such as for the YMCA (I think), and some churches offer volleyball too on the off season from marching band. So I think if you looked around, you could find a place to play volleyball outside of school if you’d like. Finally, (oh boy), band camp. It’s wild, and a lot of work, but the wackiest things happen and it will so much fun. I loved hanging with my friends all week, and so many inside jokes and memories came from it. One of my guy friends? He got soooooo sunburnt and didn’t have any aloe. So like a responsible teenager, he doordashed and entire aloe Vera plant to the college campus where band camp is held at 🙂 and we spent 10 minutes cutting it open with scissors and trying to rub the plant on him 😂 it was a fun time. Band camp you also kind of get freedom with your friends and can do what you like outside of actual practice (if you message me I can yap more about it if you want anything specific). But in the end, it’s up to what you think will bring you more joy and will make you happy. Like I said, I believe there are still ways to do both volleyball and band, if you’re willing to not play vb for your school (it’s also a chance to make new friends outside of your school). I would recommend band, as that was the path I took and can speak from experience, but ultimately it’s up to you.

Is this your first year in marching band? Also, does your band have you memorize music? I don’t play piccolo, but I can definitely give tips for marching and just band in general. Any specific questions and I can try my best to answer as well
