If you aren’t tying with your base strings they just need to be as long as you want your ties and bracelet to be. As far as your other strings go I’d cut them long but not so long it’s not comfortable to work with. You can always add in more string fairly easily but a messy knot is a massive frustration.

For the strings I’m knotting with, I usually use like the whole thing, wrapped around a bobbin, unless there are only a few knots with that color

I make the bass string wrist and long enough for ties and keep the background on a bobbin
