I am from Virginia, USA. Anybody else? If not (if you are comfortable sharing) what country, territory, state are you from and what do you love most about it?

Wasn't born there or anything, but DC was my first duty station after boot camp, so venturing over the river to explore was never exactly going to the moon and back.

Lots of history in the commonwealth, so of which can even be found around these parts: #197910 👍

Never actually got that far west, but when I think Virginia in general, I tend to think of Bruce Hornsby (an exceptionally proud Virginian) and The Range, and how they immortalized the town of Richlands in the song "The Road Not Taken." Has the finest piano solo I've ever heard, and I can only fantasize about ever being *that* good.

Been a minute since I heard it myself. As soon as those first notes start playing, I'm back on the train and zooming past Arlington like it was yesterday...

@GiuseppeK I was not born in VA either but have lived here for practically my whole life. The southeastern area is where I am most familiar with. I loved reading your responses. In what branch of the military did you serve?

Close to Williamsburg? From a very young age, my favorite spot in the touristy area was the Old Gaol, entirely owing to the fact that some of Blackbeard's boys were held there (I was a bit of a pirate nerd before it was socially acceptable). I'm told that my mother repeatedly rode The Loch Ness Monster while I was still inside, which might account for a lot...

And I was Navy.

Yeah close to Williamsburg. That is a very interesting fact about Blackbeard the pirate. And lol to the Loch Ness ride. I haven't been to Busch Gardens too much any ride that goes down makes me feel sick lol. And my grandfather was in the navy as well. Thank you for your service. Do you like to make alpha patterns or normals better and which do you think you are more skilled at making?

A sign of getting older is when roller coasters aren't as fun as they used to be. Thinking back to when I was homebased out of Southern California and dating a girl working at Disneyland (not Jasmine, but she was a hot little thing in her own right ❤️ ). For a little while, the US parks were giving free admission to active duty, and I was once again taking advantage of that to kill some time while waiting for her to finish her shift. I remember one Saturday night when the crowd was so thin, getting on the "California Screamin'" coaster was a walk-on, and I proceeded to ride three times back to back. It hit me midway through that final ride that maybe I'd better start taking it easy... 🤮

Of the two, I suppose I prefer normals. I don't think I've fully got my alpha game dialed in just yet, but it's nice to mix it up in order to keep things fresh. I must confess you intrigue me a bit: all of your contributions to date are alphas, both in terms of original patterns and submitted photos, yet you've got normals on your To-Dos (I'll be staying tuned to see how they turn out).

Very interesting story from your past there. Thank you for sharing. As of now, I only know how to do alphas other than a Chevron or candy stripe or something like that but would like to try to learn some normals, at least an arrowhead and it's variations. I don't know if everything on my to-dos will be done, as it changes from time to time. I am determined to make arrowheads and will post them upon completion.

To me, something like #112428 is the next progression after achieving mastery with candystripes and chevrons (then I discovered "Greek waves," and those kept me busy for a loooooong time).

I'm sure you are right. I tried making an arrowhead twice yesterday. The first time resulted in wasted tangled string, whereas the second I just messed up on a step and got confused. I think learning to read the normal patterns will help a lot. Thank you for the pattern link!

I didn't want to insult your intelligence or anything by asking if you already knew how to "read" and follow a normal pattern. Took me an embarrassingly long time to grasp the concept myself, but when I did, suddenly a whole new world of possibilities was opened to me.

If it might be of any use to you, as I recall, it all came down to examining a simple pattern I could've practically done blindfolded, and comparing to how it was represented on the screen. Suddenly, things just started to click. If we give #1 and #2 some study, maybe lightning can strike twice?

Failing that, Masha will probably be able to explain things better than I ever could:
