I realize I'm in the minority, but I really didn't care much at all for the new Spiderman movie, and I'm grateful I didn't pay for it (the theater just opened a few weeks ago in my neighborhood, and my date managed to score free tickets for herself and a plus one). As a fanboy, while I didn't appreciate the treatment of the Punisher (the only Marvel character I've ever cared enough about to read the comics), my main gripe was the sense that the movie was teaching the audience some rotten lessons. Without spoiling anything, it's considered by many that the Punisher's ruthless way of dealing with irredeemably evil people is "problematic." Okay, fair enough. But the movie expects us to sympathize with a villain who sadistically violated the autonomy of thousands of innocent people just for laughs, and hurt (or worse) even more for absolutely no reason, yet we're to think of them as simply "misunderstood"...? Gimme a freakin' break. I was pleased to hear that a few of the cultural commentators for whom I'll tune in on YT seem to be in agreement (nice to not be totally alone), and it makes me glad I wasn't any more emotionally involved: sounds as though this one managed to undo all the heroic sacrifices Spidey made in the last movie (didn't see any of them), so it could've been worse on a personal level. |

In an attempt to bring some balance to The Force, I'll contribute a positive review/recommendation for the last thing I saw in theaters before that one: a Thai production called GOHAN. It's a simple story of a stray dog, and follows his life from puppy to elderly dog and the people who cared for him along the way. Fair warning to dog people (such as myself), you'll want to bring your own supply of tissues and keep them handy.[MILD SPOILER] I was so happy that when the credits started rolling, the old boy was still alive and happy. It certainly had its share of sad moments, but a lot of the tears are happy ones. Without spoiling anything, as far as I'm aware, no other movie has ever tried to show us what it is old dogs see when they're dreaming. 😭

Oh I have a lot to recommend. It depends on your mood I will start with "bad times at the El royale hotel" I like that movie really I really enjoyed watching it (lots of plot twists) "Better days" i can't remember if it is a Japanese movie or a Chinese one but anyway I like it and was really emotionally affected And for crimes I suggest "zodiac" one of the best crime movies I have ever watched (mark ruffalo is such a great actor) |

But the last movie I watched at the cinema was" the odyssey" In my opinion it wouldn't have been that good if I have watched it on tv or smth It was great because I watched it on the cinema and as someone who doesn't prefer horror movies and doesn't watch them I was freaking out (terrified) |

If you enjoy largely forgotten/hidden gem kind of movies, I'd recommend trying to track down a 1986 Australian film called FROG DREAMING (in the US, it was called THE QUEST, and inexplicably THE GO-KIDS in the UK). Henry Thomas, the lead actor from E.T., played an American boy named Cody who finds himself Down Under and living with a guardian after the deaths of his parents. Inventive and brave to the point of foolhardy, he becomes obsessed with discovering the truth behind a Loch Ness Monster-type beastie rumored to be living in an old, flooded quarry. Low budget GOONIES sort of stuff, but if no one spoils it for you, it'll keep us in suspense all the way to the conclusion. This is one of those movies that has haunted me most of my life, and I believe it bears the most responsibility for my mild case of submechanophobia (learned that's a thing). So much so, during my first visit to Australia, even before I made any sort of pilgrimage to the MAD MAX 2 filming locations, I wanted to find that quarry and see it for myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEC_evPtrJo |
