i need help figuring out the pattern for 48848 . Im not sure what to do when i get to the middle and it spilts please help!!!!!!!

When you have a hole like this, you can either leave loose strings in the hole or hide the loose strings in the edges of the hole.In this pattern it is intended that you hide the loose strings and leave just the middle two out to do the chain part.
