How do you like to organize your very long thread (120+ inches long)?

Hi Y'all, I'm currently beginning a necklace for a friend. Since the final "bracelet" needs to be 17.5 inches long, I cut the strings to each be 120 inches long, and so far my attempts to manage the strings have left me feeling frustrated, and I've only just started this project. I currently have the strings each rolled up so that they're only about 6 inches long, and the bulk of the string is kept in the floss' original paper tie, but it's bulky and not all that secure. There must be a better way. So, people of Bracelet Book, what are some ways of organizing very longs strings that work well for you?

Have you tried embroidery floss bobbins?

You could also wrap hairties or tape around the rolled up strings

@silentgirl and @halokiwi Thanks for these recommendations, these are both good ideas that I haven't tried before! I'll give them a shot. 🙂

you could wrap them with tape and then just retape it every time you get farther

I made single colour alpha for my boyfriend, I bought the super long pack of embroidery floss and had a similar issue. I ended up rolling it like a ball of yarn, it worked alright but the idea of a floss bobbin sounds good too!

HI @RedVampire I normally just wrap the thread in a rubber band, this is probably not the most productive way though 😂. I'll have to try these Ideas with like tape and stuff

you could as well use a slip knot. I use Slip Knots for projects, that I put aside for a while to keep all threads bundled. But it works well on single threads as well and you need nothing else than your thread itself, no tape, no rubber gums, nothing additional.
For Alphas I work with Bobbins, also I put all strings on Bobbins and have them sorted in Boxes, like yellow, orange, red shades, pink and violet, blue and green, brown shades and grey shades, Black and white, color changing threads, metallic threads. Makes it easy to find what you need.
Cut offs I collect in an own box for alphas, sometimes you need just a short thread for five knots and I would never touch a full bobbin for that.
Organizing all this stuff helps a lot and gets me much quicker into projects.
There`s nothing more annoying than always having to untangle threads when you simply want to knot and proceed on a project.
And definitely: Bobbins can also disturb, I basically use them on alphas, row-by-row normal patterns are hell with bobbins (for me). So ever project needs different "tricks" 😊

yes i also use slip knots (i thtink that’s what they are)! even for bracelets or shorter lengths - for extra long ones i slip knot the resulting slip knotted threads as well to make them shorter. that’s what works for me because i don’t like pulling skeins or bobbins or balls through the loops. it can get a little bit annoying aa you have to keep retrying the slip knots as you use up the thread but i consider it a worthy sacrifice especially if you use the threads more slowly (less knots wirh that thread) 🙂 hope this helps!

you can have the string clipped onto your clipboard, (if you use one) and use binder clips to keep the strings separated, only unclip the two strings you are going to use, I found out with plogie that it also helps keep you knots from turning inside-out, and keeping the bracelet straight an neat. 🙂 hope it helped you an anyone else reading this comment

I’ve been doing an alpha-type project with yarn, and because it’s so thick, I’ve been using hair ties to organize it and tie the excess string into a mini ball

I usually seperate long string by wrapping it around my hand leaving a little piece of string, then taking it out, and then wrapping the little string around it. Hope this helps! 🙂
