No, just make sure that all your base strings are the same size and all your working strands (the colors) are the same size.

Nope, people even sometimes purposely make the base strings thicker than the actual knotting strings to make the resulting knots more square

I definitely have to try this because my knots are very long... Is there a kind of string that is easy/good as a basestring to embroidery floss leading strings?
