When doing the straight edges technique all knots on the left edge are replaced by bf knots and all knots on the right edge by fb knots. In alphas I think It's more of a stylistic choice because there are so many factors that influence the straightness of an alpha. It will give the edge a smooth look opposed to the more ridged look when doing b and f knots.
