what do you mean by variegated wave? i'm not sure if i've heard of that. if you mean variated wave i'm not totally sure what that means either

I guess you mean the video by @Racoon when you say it doesn't really start from the beginning (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVG81EMSFJg) but like kinsey said it doesn't really matter how you start. You can start with a loop or you could just start and leave some string at the top to make ties later.

There are also some other videos if you search for them on YouTube.

What you need to do is
-lay out your basestrings like you would for any alpha
-put a long string of one of the colours you want to use on the left and one of the other colour on the right. Those are your leading strings.
-take the leading string on the left and do f knots on all base strings (but not the other leading string), do b knots with the same leading string until it's in its original place again.
-take the leading string on the right and do b knots on all base strings (but not the other leading string), do f knots with the same leading string until it's in its original place again.
