How to make shaped alpha patterns in generator?

I was just wondering how people make shaped alpha patterns, because if you look at one there's these small grey lines that surround the outside of the shaped pattern. If that makes sense. If anyone has made shaped alpha patterns, how do you make them?

You right click (rather than typically left click) to create an empty knot.You can select 'fill' on the 'Draw' page, and you can make a whole area empty knots (saves time rather than clicking each individual knot) It will look like a white pixel with a horizontal grey line through it. |

I just hold my mouse down and it turns a pixel to a zero knot (gap/dash)
