Like the title says, what do you look for in a pattern? Are there things in a pattern that turn you off from making it (or vice versa)? I'm curious as someone who both posts patterns as well as physically make them.

When I create patterns I have a few "rules" that I try to follow:
1. Limiting the colors to not have a bunch of similar colors.
2. If there is an outline, I try to make it all continuous
3. I always makes patterns symmetrical (if I can).
4. Simple one color backgrounds

Look for more realistic/detailed as it can get (meaning I make more wall hangings patterns than keychains! lol).

I dislike patterns that use a lot of the same color. I’m a normal pattern knotter, and since I can’t go out and buy more string regularly, I hate it when I’m cutting my string and I run out of a color/it uses up my entire skein.

When I design a normal pattern, I try to
- make it good for segment-knotting
- make the knotting structure consistent, so that it easy to memorise
- avoid anything "random"

I do not create patterns but when knotting the main thing I look for is a pattern that is able to be segment knotted. I never memorize patterns so longer patterns are fine, but there are three ways I segment knot. The more traditional way people are aware of and then sometimes if a pattern is not able to be segment knotted easily, I will knot in a candy stripe or chevron formation. Hope that makes sense!

I will add to the chorus and say segment knotting! I don’t like going row by row and segment knotting makes bracelets much more fun to me. Memorizable is also a plus so either small or simpler patterns are nice, but I do do larger or more complicated ones on occasion.
