They have different structures.

Example for a normal pattern: #150
Example for an alpha pattern: #4847

In normal patterns there is only one string type. The knotting structure is diagonal. All strings make knots.

In alpha patterns you have base strings and leading strings. The base strings are vertical strings onto which you knot horizontally with the leading strings. To make knots of different colours, you switch between different leading strings.

lol, its a tad difficult, but what I have figured out, is that normals are diagonal looking, and easier to physically make, while alphas are straight up and down, and are easier to create a pattern on here
