I have an alpha pattern i'd like to make in my saved patterns, it is 43 strings wide. usually around 85 rows long is what fits my wrist, should I make it longer? I don't want to mess it up because I want it to stay centered.

You could make the tying strings longer? Or add an equal amount of "blank" rows to either side The pattern is? 43 strings? And 85 is the good amount of rows?

I'm assuming 43 strings also means 43 rows so:
85- 43 = 42 (total of plain rows you want to add)

42÷ 2 = 21 (amount of rows you add to the left, and amount of strings you add to the right of your desired pattern)

I don't have much experience with alpha patterns so unfortunately I'm not really getting what you mean but maybe this can help

You could just add more background color strings
