hello! i’d consider myself a pretty experienced bracelet maker, especially when it comes to alphas. however, i still very much struggle with normal patterns. i find that when i follow a tutorial im happy with the result, but if i follow a pattern myself, i still struggle. i think ive found a knot tension im happy with (i tend to make my alphas very loose, so normal patterns have a tighter tension), but im still finding my edges are going very wavy. when i use the straight edge technique, the bracelet itself is straight, but the fb/bf knots on the edges themselves always look quite wavy. overall, im just looking for some tips! what helped you with your normal pattern improvement?

Sorry, I don't have any hacks for normal patterns--I also use the f/b straight edge technique and still I sometimes forget and switch it up halfway without meaning to. I just wanted to say that I looked at your bracelet photos here and they look so clean and neat!! (I love Hadestown too, those bracelets are amazing and it's so cool you got that program signed!)

Hi! Are you going row by row or segment knotting? Segment knotting is often harder for some people to wrap their heads around, but it really helped me early on with the stability and tension of a bracelet. I also find that if a pattern ends with the same kind of knot on a side, it will come out pretty straight without modifying the pattern at all. For typical 1212 patterns, I really like doing my knots in the order one would do a candy stripe or a chevron; a chevron will make the whole bracelet come out straighter--@halokiwi has a good tutorial on this if you want to look into that. Also, sometimes I will switch strings in a normal pattern, when knotting one color on top of the other, if one of those strings gets used more, I may change which one is standing and which one is running to change which one will do more as the bracelet continues. Normals with identifiable animals/objects are some of my favorites to do, let me know if you have any more specific questions.
