Straight start - normal pattern

I can't figure out how to start a pattern without a loop or tying all strings together. I want the start to be straight, and making basically a rectangual. Amy odraz?

You could try setting up all the strings in the right order and taping them all down right next to each other and not tying a knot at the top until later

do what the previous user aid, but use a clipboard, that way you can tie your knots tightly, and as close to the beginning as you want it to be, but be sure to not pull too hard, or you might pull the strings out. you can then braid the strings on both sides when you're done.
