How would you start an alpha pattern?

You make alpha's by taking the leading (background) string and working horizontally along base strings, alternating each row to make forward knots, and then backward knots. Switching your colour(s) as your pattern suggests.
MashaKnots has great videos for Alpha's, with everything explained there so definitely check that out.
If you've never made an Alpha before I recommend patterns that use 12 base strings, and no more than 2 colours. Keep it as simple as you can so you don't get overwhelmed.

There's different ways to start an alpha. You can tie your basestrings to something like a keyring using larkheads knots. You could do a loop with your basestrings and start your pattern after that. You can do triangle ends. There are many possibilities.
