managing alphas with a lot of colors

i've been getting a bit frustrated when making alphas with a lot of different colors, especially ones with frequent color switches. it takes forever to untangle the color i need from everything else, only to make one or two knots with it and need to switch it again. i was wondering if theres any method to make switching colors faster/easier? do yall have any tips?

The easiest solution would be to work with shorter pieces of leading string. This way there is less to get tangled/to untangle.

i try to keep colors i need a lot of on the bobbins and it does help, but i still mostly struggle with trying to fish out the specific color i need from the mess of strings.. the pattern im doing switches colors pretty frequently. is there a specific place i can put the other colors that aren't my leading string so i can access them easier
