So I am incredibly new to this. I’ve literally ONLY made candy strips and chevron patterns. I’m trying to branch out into design patterns but I feel like no matter what I do my first 20 rows just look like a mess.

After I get it started I can make it semi functional but the very beginning is where my problems are.

I usually just tie all the strings together in one big knot to start and begin my pattern but that makes them all bunched together and uneven.

If anyone has any tips to help with this problem or and links I would really appreciate it 😊😊💗

Hi, to make a smoother start I recommend triangle ends.
I've written a tutorial on it https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/98_how-to-make-triangle-ends/
But you could also check out some YouTube videos on it for example https://youtu.be/05sDSDDr5rM

i dont know if this gonna help you but from my experience the first row especially in chevron gonna look bad and you cant realy do something except practice and even that will not necessarily make your first row look perfect (I have been making bracelets for over a year and still my first row in a bracelet looks messy ) for chevron i recommend to start in a teardrop loop. masha knots have realy helpful tutorial for that and i think teardrop loop gives the best start for chevron. i hope it was helpful!

If you are interested in designing Normal patterns, here are so tips:

Here are my two tutorials for Normal patterns:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HolYORv9P8E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_2uZ1RQ5Jc

I recommend starting with a 12 string pattern when learning to make a Normal pattern because there are enough strings that you can actually see a design, but not too many strings that make it hard for beginners. You can make the pattern easier by using less colors.

I always start with a basic/simple base pattern like:
#26192
#2146
#1516
#18
#1673

I then add things like diamonds/zigzag/lines/dots/squares, and play around with the different elements by adding/taking away things. I look at patterns that already exist and see how these elements are made. I recommend saving your base pattern as a couple patterns, so if you don’t like how your pattern looks, you don’t lose all your work, you can just go to your other patterns and start again.

Make sure to pay attention to the top of the screen where there are warnings. I usually don’t worry if it saying the top strings don’t match the bottom strings until I’m done with my pattern.

The easiest way to make the strings match is to copy the pattern’s code and paste it under itself, save and preview. If the strings still don’t match, just repeat this step again, and so on.

I also recommend making some of these basic patterns that you want to use for your patterns, because it really helps you learn and visualize how the knot structure works, and making designing easier.

i don't make the big knot at the beginning of my patterns. what i do is kind of weird: i tape the string down with a good 5-6 inches hanging freely in front of the tape. i also put my strings on the tape in order of color so they aren't tangled. this usually makes my patterns look pretty neat. after i am done knotting, i will tie a knot at the beginning of the pattern and at the very end. then i braid the excess. i hope this makes sense.

I definitely reccommend searching youtube and finding someone you are comfortable with watching that teaches you ho to start your patterns nice and clean with triangle ends or a loop! I watched Masha Knots on Youtue and she was super helpful! She also has tons of different tutorials on a bunch of the basics and has content for intermediate and advanced bracelet makers too!! Hope this Helps and Good Luck!!
