wrong number of strings

i have noticed that whenever it says the amount of base strings on a pattern, for example, it would say it is 18 base string, i count it and it is only 17, Why is that??

The amount of strings in an alpha pattern is the amount of base strings plus one because one leading string is counted in addition to the base strings.
