I want to start an 86 by 100 alpha as a wall hanging but I don’t know how long I would need my base strings to be

You can use an alpha you’ve made before to figure out how long each row is, and then multiply that number by 100 to get the length of your base strings (not including ties). If you don’t want to go to all that trouble, I recommend cutting your base strings to be 15cm plus extra for ties (the extra amount depends on what type of ties you’re doing)

I’d say around 15-20cm not including ties

I would say at least 50 cm or 20 inches plus extra wiggle room or for ties, this is probably an overestimate but i would say better safe than sorry

If you are making a wall hanging, use about 50 cm of string for each base thread.

You can use 50cm like the others are saying, but just keep in mind that you’ll have a ton of thread left over. Most people’s rows are 1.5mm, maybe 2mm max, so 50cm would leave you with 30-35cm extra (including ties)
