Hello! I have made a few alpha bracelets, but am still new to the process. I just finished two joycons of #32250, and am currently halfway through working on #32790. Both of my keychains of #32250 looked squished, as in skinnier and longer than the actual pattern on BraceletBook. Someone else has posted a picture of the pattern and mine looks differently proportioned, while their’s looks correct. On #32790, it is already looking proportioned incorrectly and I am only halfway through. Is this because of my knot tightness? I make them pretty in-between— not too tight, but not loose enough for gaps either. Or is this proportion problem because of something else? If anyone knows the explanation it would be greatly appreciated 🙂

It’s most likely because of the tightness of the knot. If you tie the first half tighter, the knot itself will be tighter. Hope this helps 😊

I might be because you tie your knots differently. If you tie your knots tighter, than you will have a smaller knot. If you tie your knots loosely, you’re going to have a bigger one or more stretched out. Hope this helps!

alphas are much different than normal patterns. the knots fit together differently, so it requires you to tie them slightly different. basically what is happened with your keychains is that the rows arent completely flat. when you get used to making normal patterns, it is normal to make rows diagonally (such as in a candystripe), so when starting alphas, it can be hard to adjust. although it may not look like it, the rows are slightly diagonal when you are tying your alpha. it really just takes practice to understand how the knots fit together in alphas and how you need to tie them, but I can give a few tips. first, don't make any sort of triangle ends or loops or any sort of special start, just start in a straight line. this way you will know that you are knotting against something completely flat, and your rows will be the way you want them. I would recommend either using tape or some sort of dowel/skewer. for actually tying the knots, I would just say make sure the first half of the knot is positioned correctly, basically as high as you can get it (it doesnt necessarily have to be tight). to help with this, when tying forward knots it may be easier to pull the (half) knot up toward the right, and with backward knots to the left. overall, just practice. it takes time to learn these things, so don't get frustrated.

just so you know, I didn't actually see your bracelets, I just know what they look like because I used to have this problem with all of my alphas.

and as for those keychains that you already made, what you can do to try to make them look better is basically slide all of the knots up to position them correctly. since the base strings are only knotted over, all of the knots can slide up and down them. this is a quick and dirty fix, and it does work, but I defintely wouldn't rely on this for alphas, you really should try to understand how to tie your knots correctly the first time.

@srhamy28 thank you! I really appreciate it. I will continue to practice and experiment to see what works best for me 😁
