alpha knots are too long

whenever i try doing alpha bracelets, the knots i tie are usually more rectangular than square, so in the end the pattern ends up very long and stretched out. how do i make the knots more compact?

Make sure that both your first and second knots are tight and secure. In other words, when doing your knots, pull the first half of the knot pretty tight as well as the second knot.

The first half of the knot tightens it and the second half secured it so I would try doing both halves tighter

I have this same issue, but the knots I make are already very tight. I have been using crochet cotton as my base threads, could it be that my base threads are too thick?
