Hey! I’m confused on like alphas in general.. I wanted masha knots tutorial and like her explanation made sense, but doing it on string just messed me up. When you have 2 colors and let’s say ur making a star, black is the background and white is the design. So your doing 5 knots in black then 4 in white what do u do with the black? Because if you don’t knot them together wouldn’t there be a gap in between your 2 colors? Same thing for half and half alphas like one half is white the other is blue how do u not have a gap? |

If you use the flat alpha technique, the previous leading string gets inserted into the first knot of the new colour. This connects the bracelet when making colour switches.If you use regular colour switches, this is not the case. I really recommend watching her video on the flat alpha technique if you haven't already. If the flat alpha technique video is the one you watched and it's not working out when tying, really make sure that you are doing it correctly. You need to make the first half of the knot of the new colour, then put the old leading string over the base string you are knotting onto and then make the second half of the knot, so the old leading string is between the first and the second half of the knot sandwiched between the base string and the new leading string. |

@halokiwi okay so let’s say we have a string 1 2 3 and 4. 1 and 3 is background 2 and 4 is the actual colors would you knot 1 and 2 together then 2 and 3 together? But if you need to switch colors would you use 4 on 3? But then you just knotted 2 on there so the knots would overlap?

You would make the knots in the order 1 2 3 4 and in the next row in the order 4 3 2 1. You always follow each row of the pattern from one side to the other side and in the next row you tie from one side to the other side in the opposite direction. Have you watched MashaKnots' video on the flat alpha technique? |

@Calhoun293 in your example you have e have base strings 1 2 3 and 4. 1 and 3 is background 2 and 4 is the actual color. Then you make a knot of the background colour on the base string 1, then a knot of the actual colour on the base string 2 (threading the previous background colour string through that knot), then a knot of the background colour on the base string 3 (threading the previous actual colour string through that knot), then a knot of the actual colour on the base string 4 (threading the previous background colour through that knot)

I'm kind of new to making alpha patterns and I've noticed how my knots end up more rectangular than square. Does anyone have any tips on how to make my knots more consistent and square shaped?

Hey all! New to alphas. I have the hang of it I think, but why do my knots lean one way on forward rows and the other way on backward rows? Is it tension? Should I be smooshing the knots sideways with my nail as I go like you do from the bottom to make sure the row is straight?

I should mention that my background colour is fine, it’s when I make a colour change that I notice the tilting
