So I want to start trying to make alpha patterns and I wanted to know a couple of this. What is the best tool to use to start the pattern on. I know some people use keychains but is there an easier alternative for my first tone. Also if I dont have a long enough string and i need to add more on to. I mean for base strings and the added strings is that possible or will it mess up the design?

I would probably just attach the base stings to a wooden dowel if I was making an alpha for the first time, it’s easier to tape down than a keychain so it won’t move around much. Base strings don’t need to be very long because you’re not using them to make knots. If you don’t have enough, just use a different color for base strings because they won’t affect the design but they will appear on the ends

the dowel is deff a pretty good way to start as the first row is always the most precise. if its a small pattern and you dont want to start it on something a strong line of tape also does the trick. And if you are totally new a pattern with only a few colors is also a great way to start

Okay thanks so much for the help! Last question im sure its probably common sense but when i do it on the wooden dowel how do i move it on to a key chain is that even possible? I’m trying to make a gift for a friend.

If you want to make a keychain, it is best to start on the keyring if you are using a D-shaped keyring. You start on it the same way you would start on a dowel.If you only have a regular keyring, I recommend starting with a loop that you can put the keyring through or making a double-sided keychain. https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/76_double-sided-keychain/ |

Okay thank you!! I havent got the key rings yet so I’ll keep in mind to do a D key ring. Its a pretty intense pattern for my first time but i want it to look good

Loll its 211225. She loves art the clown and her b day is coming up so ive decided to lock in and try it even though i swore to never try alpha patterns cus they seemed way too hard

I think that pattern is actually good to begin with. You start out with only 2 colours, so you have some time to practice. The only thing is that this pattern is very long, but I think you can do it.
