I want to start a keychain and use the clean back technique. Can i afterwards just cut the beginning of the first leading string or do i need to secure it somehow?

You can cut it after doing a few rows to secure it in the keychain

I understand, what about the very first leading string one tho? Do i also jsut cut it afterwards?

You can just cut it if i'm understanding you correctly. I usually find it works better with the straight edge technique tho bcs the beginning of the first leading string isn't on the very edge due to the first knot being a forward backward or backward forward knot.

I normally cut and put a think layer of glue or just a coating or sorts on the back

Personally I wouldnt cut it without any secure, I did it few years ago and after Daily usage it untied a bit. Now I found a method for this problem. When you want clean back alpha and you have even number of base strings/or you want different colors of background and base strings. You make BF knot (as usual), then first half of FF knot, and here (the part of the string that you dont use while making knots and it is usually on the back secured by tape) you place it between second base string and another part of the long string (the one that make knots). Now you make another half of the FF knot. I "hide" this string for 4 base strings and then It is very safe to cut.
