How do you do the straight edge technique?

I keep on seeing comments on patterns I’m going to make saying that they did the straight edge technique and from what I gather it’s adding extra strings on the ends and doing forward backward/backward forward knots, is this correct? And how do I know when to do them? Sorry if that’s sounds stupid, I’ve done simple bracelets for a while but I’m fairly knew to patterns
