Non flat color change in alpha

Whenever I make an alpha pattern my first few rows of new color change is bumpy not flat why is this?

The flat alpha technique is used for this reason, you do the first half of your knot with the new colour and lay the old string on top of the string you are tying on, you finish your knot with your new colour and the old colour is then sticking out at the back. Also I use other techniques for a flat alpha
