Hi! first time posting here, and also first time trying alphas. I've been doing normals for yeeears, and love the way alphas look but i've been feeling too intimidated by them. So i was wondering, if i'm searching for a beginner alpha pattern, should i look for the littlest amout of colors (because switching etc.) or do i look for the littlest amount of strings? Thank you in advance 🙂

Preferably, the combination of both. But anyway, I think it's easier to do a big pattern with few colors rather than a small pattern with many colors.
Something like this #1654 #26396 #155436 #47994 #164563 would be perfect for a beginner.

I would say look for fewer colors, as color switches can be a challenge for beginners. The amount of strings and/or the length of the alpha just determines how much longer it will take you 😂 I would start with lesser strings, and an even amount if you can. Just remember, when you’re looking for alphas, the number of strings that the pattern says it has is one MORE than how many base strings there are, because the string count includes the leading string

thanks to you both for your advice! i will be looking to make one of the reccomended patterns for practice🙂 also, good advice about the 1 more string! so essentially i would be looking for uneven amount of string, in order for it to be even?🤯

@vivian2004 yes to your question! i’d also recommend looking for alphas with big sections of colours again to avoid switching as much, at least that’s what i’ve found easier - yes less strings and less colours are generally better, but ultimately it depends on the pattern. i also think usually easier alphas will have more posted photos as more people do them, so you could try searching by that too 🙂

that’s also good advice, thank you so much! i’ve done 2 alphas so far and i feel like i agree with the switching, since i found it difficult to switch after 1 knot if that makes sense. i’ll look for more patterns to practice with, thank you!🙂
