Alpha and normal keychains

I just got some d ring keychains to make alphas and normal patterns onto. Does anyone have recommendations for a minimum and maximum number of base strings/regular strings that there should be to make a good keychain? My keychains have a flat part of 1 inch (25 mm)

on that size 14 to 20 base strings can fit depending on string size. But you can also fit more base string if you do a shaped start. Here is a tutorial on the shaped start for keychains: https://www.braceletbook.com/tutorials/130_shaped-keychain-tutorial/
