You'll change the colors all the same way. All you do is once you're at a point of a color change, you take your leading string (red for example) and move that up and out of the way, you get your colour you need tape that down, bring it under the base strings and make the first half of the knot you need to do with it (forward or backward), then bring the leading string back down so its resting against the knot you just did and do the next half of the knot.
