A bracelet with color changes (newbie)

Whenever you have a bracelet and it tells you to color change do you tape the string down that you want to color change with on the side of your bracelet and keep going with the string behind your bracelet until needed?

Yeah, otherwise it is very hard for the string to not slide out when tying the first knot.
