I have just started making alphas and i struggle with making the first row of knots straight and neat. Any tips on how to make my rows straighter?

Maybe take down the base strings and do the knots right against the line of tape? Also, if it’s only a row or two, you can move the knots a little with your fingernails

Knot against a piece of tape like @gross_piZa said or really anything straight. Once the first couple lines are in place you can move to your preferred method of securing and the rest should follow suit.

Possibly try doing a triangle beginning. It makes the overall bracelet straighter.
