So I’m new to alphas and when you switch colors do you bring the leading string with it the whole time?

No, you only cross it over the next knot after the first half of that knot, then after you complete that knot you put it behind the bracelet

you can also bring it the whole time if you want the clean back alpha technique, it just makes the back of your bracelet/ keychain look nicer because theres no loose strings on the back, heres a youtube tutorial that broke it down quite nicely for me, https://youtu.be/JCXIzmm0f3c They also make the bracelets alot stronger and less bendy which is nice but bare in mind it takes alot more time than the regular way so i only do it if its for a project that i really wanna make look nice
