I was starting the pattern for a contest and I used 8 string because that's how many it said. Then I went to start it and there were only 7. What happened!!?

The string count on alpha patterns includes the leading string with the base string, so it's the base strings plus 1. To find out how many base strings you need, look at the dimensions (to the left of the string count) and the first number will be the base string count.
