Hi, how do i go on about measuring my strings? Like how do i know how long i need to make each string?

when mesuring my strings i tend to measure about 4 feet per string, and when i want longer ties and add and extra 4-5 inches. also say you have less knot with a black string, instead of cutting all 4 ft you could estimate how much you would need to cut that way you are not sing as much string.
