every string you want to use is okay. just make sure all the base strings have the same size. for the length I use the length of my ties tiemes two plus the length of my wrist and a few cm as reserve

I use a crochet thread (yarn) that is slightly bigger than embroidery floss, and isn’t too fluffy. I find because it is thicker, it doesn’t wear down as much when making an alpha bracelet 😁

Any thread that you want to use is good. You just have to make sure that they are all uniform thickness or else your knots that you make in the alpha won’t be uniform and the bracelet will look less neat. 😊
