How do I know from a pattern how many strings I need and what color?

Well you need 10 base strings, 1 black string, 1 red string, and one red stripe

This is an alpha pattern, which means it's really difficult to know how many of the coloured strings you need before you start. You can see that you need 10 base strings though, which are the white ones, and then you just need one string for each of the other colours. This is really difficult to explain, I would really recommend checking out Masha Knots on youtube, she has an alpha bracelet tutorial where she goes into more detail.

This is a alpha pattern so instead of knotting with all of the strings you knot with one main string, that you switch out when there is a new color needed, on all of the base strings by going back and forth to create the design. Masha Knots has a lovely tutorial on how to read alpha patterns 🙂
