@kayla878 you add the colours as you go. The base strings can be any colour you like, they don't need to be white.

I recommend watching MashaKnots' video on the flat alpha technique to learn how to knot alphas.

For the other colors like b and d do you tie the in at the start or add them in as you go? And are the background strings supposed to be white or the other colors?
