What is a 1212 pattern?
A 1212 pattern is a pattern with only (or mostly) fb and bf knots. It has only two colours: a colour for the background and a colour for the design. The strings are in alternating order (abababab...). Since
all knots are fb or bf knots, the strings always stay in this order. They never switch places. This means that any knot can be either of the two colours. This makes it possible that any two colour design can be tied.
Step 1: Plan your design
You can use "draw alpha" in the alpha pattern generator to plan your design. You can also use a piece of graph paper. Keep in mind that the design you draw needs to be rotated 45ยฐ.
Step 2: Create you base
The base is the blank canvas on which you will draw your 1212 pattern.

First you have to figure out how many strings you need. For that you count how many knots your design is wide. My design is 10 knots wide, so I need 20 strings.

Then you count how many rows your design has. My design has 22 rows.
How to create the base quickly:
In "interactive normal" add your desired amount of strings by clicking +on either side of the pattern. For me that's twenty.

Then add two rows of fb knots and two rows of bf knots. To do that, first select fb and click + at the bottom and then select bf and click +at the bottom. Remove the four rows of f knots on top.
In "normal" delete the middle two rows and only keep the top and bottom row.

Change "colors order" to ababababab... I picked a to be the colour of the background and b the colour of the design. Pick the colour for a that is used most.
This is only 2 rows of your base, but you will most likely need more.
To create more rows, copy the knots and paste them as many times as you need.

Now that you've got your base, you can switch to "interactive normal" to "draw" your design.
Step 3: Drawing your design
To draw your design, you need to switch all the knots that aren't in the colour you want them to be to the colour you want them to be. For that fb knots need to be changed to bf and bf knots need to be changed to fb. To change a knot from fb to bf click on it normally. To change a knot from bf to fb right-click on it or click a little bit longer.

Step 4: final tweaks and adding a gradient
This step is optional. In 1212 patterns, you can often see a sort of border in the pattern preview. This border will not be seen in the tied
pattern. To make the preview look nicer, Ilike to change it to the colour that it's bordering.
Remember how I wrote that 1212 patterns have only two colours? That is not entirely correct. One colour can be multiple colours too! You can, for example, add a gradient like a sunset to the background or give your design stripes.
